In the first decades of the 19th century, Casa Romanit was originally built by the nobleman Costache Faca and completed by Grigore Romanit, a prosperous Greek merchant.  In the past, it represented one of the most elegant residences in Bucharest, serving as a venue for lavish events and royal balls.

The writer Ion Ghica described this house as follows: The walls of the rooms are all with marble (stucco), imitating the rarest and most beautiful marbles, the ceilings of a rare wealth and good taste, worked in relief by the best craftsmen brought from Ţarigrad..  The rooms are all covered in winter with expensive Uşak and Agem carpets, and in summer with fine Indian rugs: the rugs and curtains of thick silk from Damascus and Aleppo.  The chairs and sofas, all mahogany and ebony, inlaid with pearls and polished bronze figures, were upholstered in Cordoba leather.  In all the rooms, polychandes hung from the ceilings with girandoles between the doors and windows, all Venetian crystal, cut with diamonds, in which thousands of candles were reflected in the evening.

In 1834, after Romanit's death, the house underwent a transformation and became a chancellery.  Around the 1850s, the building housed the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance, being expanded with wings facing Calea Victoriei, which still exists today.

Its architecture constitutes a harmonious and symmetrical whole, highlighted by the rich stucco details.  It is a representative emblem of classical architecture from the 19th century.
