Built since 1873 in the Romanesque style with Gothic elements according to the plans of the famous Viennese architect Friedrich Smith, the Cathedral is 40 m long, 20 m wide and 22 m high.

For the construction of this cathedral between 1872 and 1873, bishop Ignatio Paoli bought two plots of land in the Stejarului slum between the railway station and the Royal Palace. Funds proved to be insufficient so Bishop Pauli sought funding at home and abroad. Among those who contributed materially were Prince Carol I of Romania and Pope Leo XIII.

in the fall of 1875 the foundation stone of the cathedral was consecrated, the moment recorded on a marble slab located next to the altar of the Mother of God.

The works were interrupted by the crisis caused by the War of Independence in 1877 and then resumed in February 1880 under the direction of the architect Carol Benish and the carpentry was ordered from Brașov to the craftsman Ion Pongratz.

The inauguration took place on February 15, 1884.
