According to the existing inscription, the church was built in 1764 by the butchers' guild Manciul, also called Manciului or Mănciulești, on the site of an older one mentioned in a document dated April 5, 1660.

According to one hypothesis, the name Batiște comes from the name of a boyar, Baptista Velleli, close friend of the ruler Radu Mihnea, who had a luxurious residence at the beginning of the 17th century.

The second hypothesis is based on documents and testimonies that lead to the idea that the name of the church and the slum comes from a cattle drive - "batişte" or "batelişte", also found in the oldest city plan dated 1770.

This document reveals that between the Batişte Church and the Scaune Church there was a very large field, with water and vegetation, a field where the cattle were brought for slaughter.
