Built in 1734, during the reign of Grigorie II Ghica (1733-1735), through the care of a boyar, the Udrecan clucer, and his wife, Maria.
Then it became a nunnery at first, following the example of the monastery of St. Ioan in Focsani, which had been founded in 1663-1664 by Voivode Grigore Ghica (1660-1664 Prince of Wallachia). The monastery of St. John in Focşani had also been dedicated to a monastery on Mount Athos.
Here Petre Ispirescu was brought by his mother, to learn to read with the teacher Nicolai (born 1830 in Bucharest, in the Pescăria Veche slum behind the Church of St. Gheorghe Nou - died 1887), who will become a famous storyteller and collector of folklore)
