Măgurile Băiței is a site of community importance designated for the protection of biodiversity, the conservation of flora and fauna, as well as natural habitats of community interest. It is located in Hunedoara county, in the southwest of Transylvania.
The area is located in the central-northern part of Hunedoara county, on the territory of Băița commune, being accessible via county road DJ706A.
The natural protected area regime for this site was established by Order of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development in 2007 and covers an area of 274 hectares.
The site comprises a variety of ecosystems, including deciduous forests, grasslands, caves and limestone cliffs. It is located at the foot of the Metaliferi Mountains, in the hydrographic basin of the Căian River, and includes the natural reserve Calcarele from Dealul Măgura.
Magurile Băiței preserves four natural habitats of community interest and protects numerous species of flora and fauna characteristic of the southwestern area of Apuseni.
The fauna includes a diverse range of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects, many of which are protected by European and international legislation.
Among the protected mammals are deer, fox, wild cat, weasel, ferret and various species of bats.
Reptiles and amphibians present include the hazel snake, blind snake, field lizard, lizard, red wood frog and brown toad.
In the category of invertebrates, the site is home to species of snails and butterflies, including the spotted bluebird and Zerynthia polyxena.
One of the main reasons for the designation of the site is to protect wild gorse, along with other rare plant species such as autumn gorse and gentian.
