Groapa Ruginoasa is a huge ravine with a diameter of over 600 meters and a depth of 100 meters, formed by the active erosion of deposits of quartz, feldspar and red clay. It is located at approximately 1400 meters altitude in the Padis - Scarisoara Mountains, in Bihor County, Romania, and is part of the Apuseni Natural Park.
The pit is characterized by sloping walls, sharp edges and vegetation that has started to grow on some of the flatter portions. Precipitation flows into this pit, contributing to the development of the torrent inside. Groapa Ruginoasa is divided into four large sectors by narrow slopes, occupies an area of almost 20 hectares and has been eroded by approximately 7 million cubic meters of material over time.
Access to Groapa Ruginoasa is via a route marked with a yellow tape from the Vârtop saddle and takes about 40 minutes to climb. The road has been improved with wooden steps and stones to facilitate access, so that it can be visited more easily, including in the winter season. It is a natural reserve of national interest because of its uniqueness.
