The described protected area is located in the Bârsei Depression, in the Olt basin, Brașov county, and covers almost 420 hectares, of which approximately 180 ha are occupied by the reservoir and the adjacent area, and the rest by heather and neighboring lands. The lake was formed by damming the Hamarandia stream, and the dams were built later.

Aquatic and marsh vegetation (reeds, reeds, sedges, etc.) grows on the western shores of the lake and the southern shores of the large marshes, occupying about 60 ha. Various habitats have been identified in this area, including water marshes, marshes, streams, hayfields and farmland.

The area has been declared a protected natural area to protect birds and their habitats, with more than 200 species of birds observed here, some of which are included in European conventions and directives, such as the Birds Directive of the European Union. Important species include the common grebe, little heron, red heron, great egret, black stork and red duck. This is one of the most important areas for waterfowl in Brașov County and central Transylvania.

The area is also important for its flora, including rare and protected species such as Pedicularis sceptrum-carolinum and Ligularia sibirica. In the northwest of the lake is a marsh with rare species that have survived the development of the area.

Mammals are represented by protected species, such as the otter (Lutra lutra), and the area received Ramsar Site status in 2006 and Natura 2000 Site in 2007, being one of the most important wetlands in Romania.

During the summer, species such as the great corcodella, herons, egrets, ducks and various reed birds nest in the area. During the migration period, thousands of birds can be seen, including herons, egrets, storks and birds of prey. The buzzard has started wintering in the area in recent years.
